PROOF proves undeniably that the intimacy of a stage play can be re-created powerfully on screen... This is a moving portrait of an intense bond between a father and daughter, an eloquent and resonant story about the ties that bind

Great movie for maths teachers

Cathy Murphy from Uckfield, Sussex, 2nd March, 2006

Not really much of a storyline for a cinema showing, maybe it should have been a TV movie or gone straight to DVD. It didn’t keep my interest and even though I admire Gynweth Paltrow normally throughout this film her voice grated on me. I suppose it was her interpretation of someone bordering on the edge of madness. As always it was a pleasure to watch Anthony Hopkins but his role wasn’t enough to save the movie in my eyes. All in all very disappointing.

Insulting

John from St Andrews, 9th September, 2006

The film never looked like it left the stage (e.g. expansive, predictable gestures; very little set variation; generally overacted). Still, I can't see how it would have enthralled even an enthusiastic playgoer. Hopkins is ill, Gwyneth thinks she might be too, Gywyllynnhallwl has always liked her. Add to that the suspense of a difficult math problem (a problem that is never specified, either because the writer couldn't think of one, or s/he underestimated viewer intelligence), and you've got all the excitement of a boiled turnip.

In depth life

Nick Russell from Surrey, UK., 13th August, 2006

Wow, what a film. This is not a light and easy film it is much more in depth than the average. I can imagine if you like to be entertained by easy going films, then this will not suit. The acting is, as you would expect with the cast, excellent. Although it is about a Proof, there is little math in the film. The subject matter is really about relationship, family and love. A classically directed film from a play, that relies on its subject matter and not fantastic effects or myths to thrill the viewer.

Loved it loved it!

A Customer from Wareham, England, 25th June, 2007

I remember starting to watch this film a while ago but it had to go back to the video store before I became involved with it. I am so glad I came back to it. I absolutely love it, I shall be buying it, it simply has to be in my collection. The acting is intense and involving, Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) can be forgiven for The Day After Tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain - everything. He plays the character perfectly, you cannot help but be enthralled by him, his character is so endearing, so human and so tender. It is good to see the perfect Miss Paltrow prepared to show herself as a dowdy, neurotic recluse. If the sister were mine she might have been mysteriously murdered overnight. Hopkins was good - humble and willing to take a back seat. I cannot recommend this film enough but I'll still be careful about who I recommend it to (excuse syntax it's late and I'm tired), if a friend doesn't like it I may have to not like them anymore.

Something a little different

A Customer from London, 6th March, 2010

Really enjoyed this. It was something a little different. Made a change from seeing the same old subjects being covered in films.

Good cast and believable characters especially haunted Gywinnie P. Wish we had seen more of Hopkins. Sad story but with a wicked ending. Recommended.
