This science fiction anthology features DOOM, together with PITCH BLACK and the sequel, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. PITCH BLACK is a dark, atmospheric sci-fi thriller with a sharp sense of humour, in which a spacecraft crashes on a mysterious planet, forcing the remaining survivors to seek help from a convicted murderer, Riddick. It appears that the only life form on the planet is a dangerous species of flesh-eating alien that emerges from underground when darkness appears. Before long, the abandoned passengers realise that a rare eclipse is about to immerse the planet in darkness - the hunt is on.
DOOM - In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilisation. Scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn't be, and trying find out what happened. Sarge and his unit of high-tech Marines are sent in to investigate a disturbance on the base which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters. Based on one of the most popular video games of all time.
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK - In this sequel to the cult sci-fi hit PITCH BLACK, Riddick is on the run from those that want the bounty on his head. He becomes caught-up in a power struggle and is singled out as the only man who can stop the evil Necromongers from taking over the Universe.

Crash Bang Wallop!

I guess this film 'does exactly what it says on the tin'. Unfortunately the writing on the tin says make a film that isn't as good as the first. It's obviously had a lot of money spent on it - the sets, costumes and special effects are all up to scratch. Vin Diesel reprises his role from the first movie (flexes his muscles and keeps putting his goggles on and off) and they've even got Dame Judi Dench to turn up to film a couple of scenes as some 'ghost-like' apparition with a bad wig. The problem is they’ve spent so much time and money on the effects there isn’t any space left in the movie for the story to be given a chance! There’s a huge space battle, there are thousands of computer generated soldiers invading a planet, there’s a prison on a planet that turns into a fireball at every sunrise (called ‘Crematoria’ - gedit?), and there’s a bad guy who can tear your soul out of you in a very special-effecty-kind-of-way. If you liked the last three (or should that be first three?) Star Wars movies then you’ll probably love it.

The Chronicles Of Riddick

MAXIMILIAN from , 13th May, 2009

The Chronicles Of Riddick is an exceptionally well-made piece of sci-fi/action. The film is stunningly beautiful to look at: with lavish production, set and costume design. But, the story does not make one blind bit of sense - but it doesn't matter. I liked this film in the same way that I used to like DUNE (1984), David Lynch's adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel - that was another film which was beautiful-looking but had a story which didn't make one blind bit of sense. A word of advice: watch The Chronicles Of Riddick and don't bother trying to follow the story, just put your brain in neutral, sit back and enjoy the stunning visuals. I first watched this film on ITV1 several months ago (and ITV1 has this habit of cutting the end credits off when they show a film) - so it was nice to watch the theatrical cut. When I watch a film, I always stay for the end credits because I think it is important to know about the cast and crew involved in the film.
