Clint Eastwood plays an alcoholic, dim-witted cop, Ben Shockley, who has to escort an irate prostitute, Gus Mally (Sondra Locke), from Las Vegas to Phoenix so she can testify in a mob trial. Gus immediately warns Ben of the danger that they're in, but he doesn't believe her. He eventually figures out that his superiors want Gus dead and chose him for the job because they thought he'd fail. The two spend most of the film eluding the trigger-happy cops. The banter between Ben and Gus, who initially despise each other, is just as brutal and entertaining as the action set pieces. And when the two finally warm to each other, it's surprisingly effective. Eastwood and Locke made many films together, but THE GAUNTLET features what may be their strongest collaboration. Literal-minded critics may malign the film for its over-the-top explosive action, but it's clear that Eastwood was aware of how outrageous and preposterous the action in the film is. As Jan De Bont would later do with another wildly entertaining and implausible film involving a bus, SPEED, Eastwood here has stripped down the action movie to its bare essence. THE GAUNTLET is a fun ride.

Radio Times

In this effective action adventure, Clint Eastwood directs and stars as a discredited and dim cop escorting prostitute Sondra Locke to a trial in Phoenix, Arizona, with mobsters and corrupt officials trying to stop him. The shoot-outs prove less engaging than the mismatched couple's smart-talking infighting, and Eastwood selflessly highlights (his then girlfriend) Locke's acting range with understanding. All very interesting to watch in the light of their subsequent acrimonious lawsuit. Eastwood also blurs the line between law enforcement and the way the Mob conducts its business to provide extra food for thought in a compelling and well paced tale.

Halliwell's Film Guide

The epitome of seventies violence, with no excuse except to stage one detailed shoot-up or explosion after another. Well done for those who like this sort of thing.

Good Clint Eastwood movie

Dave1948 from , 17th November, 2007

Enjoyed this film - Clint's acting is on form. The plot is not as believable as most in some of his other films - but watch it - you will not be disappointed.

Not his best, but Clint is Clint

PetePool from merseyside, 16th June, 2004

From the start you could see this wasnt going to be a Dirty Harry-type film, the story was paper thin and very disjointed. But if you love Clint films and take this in the same context as any which way its a good film. By watching this you will see where the idea for 'The A-Team' came from. The one thing that did work was the pairing with Sondre Locke; the two looked electric together.

This is a defo must-see film but not a Clint Classic.

Dated but amusing

A Customer from Swaffham, 2nd February, 2010

Clint Eastwood can almost always be relied on both in his role as an actor or director or both. This is one of the lesser films in his CV. However, Sondra Locke is very amusing and feisty and their relationship saves the film. The action parts ie on the motorbike are totally unbelievable unless the folks in the helicopter are blind. Not a memorable offering.

ON THE BUSES

candid from from Tonbridge, 12th October, 2009

Rather self indulgent Clint Eastwood movie in which the director and star both take potshots at their own onscreen tough guy persona. This is a tale of redemption and political corruption about a slow witted Arizona cop told with great wit in a carefully written screenplay that wants to entertain as well as inform. The set pieces are well done but over the top but Eastwood is making ironic commentary on the violence of White America, the violence of American Cinema and of his own previous portrayal of Dirty Harry. So long as you take it in the spirit intended, this is good fun, especially as Sondra Locke makes their onscreen relationship work by imbuing it with a secret sense of what their offscreen relationship was like. Solid political and sexual satire that refuses to take itself too seriously.
