A fascinating, close-up view of the world of insects, snails, spiders, and other tiny invertebrates as they work, eat, fight and procreate. This acclaimed French documentary was filmed with special microscopic cameras and high-resolution microphones, utilizing slow motion and time-lapse photography to capture bees collecting nectar, spiders ensnaring their prey, mosquitoes hatching, and other minute wonders of the insect world, resulting in a breathtaking glimpse of the beauty and poetry that exists underfoot.

On the one hand, Microcosmos is a wonderful demonstration of HD, Bluray quality. In that regard, it wouldn't look out of place displayed on an LCD in the window of Curries. On the other hand, its desperately dull. It boasts narration by Kristin Scott Thomas, but shortly after the film begins, Thomas explains that; in order to fully appreciate the insect world, she'd better shush. After that, her voice is scarcely heard again. Therefore, don't expect to be educated either. David Attenborough - this is not. So, while this film would make a sensational screen-saver; if you want an attractive and informing nature documentary, rent the Planet Earth series instead.
