Realistically grim

Jazzman from , 1st July, 2009

Well made, expensive production about underground Danish fighters doing their best to oppose the German occupation. Who does what, to who & why gets a bit confusing - for all the brave effort little seems to be achieved. Very watchable as based on a true story. The Gestapo Head Hoffmann did exist - but did he survive the war?. That's another story!

excellent thriller

A very well made WW2 thriller based on the true life escapades of the Danish resistance. Acting and direction was excellent and it looks like a polished Hollywood production. I really enjoyed this movie

Wonderful

A Customer from North Shields, 15th July, 2009

This film brings to life the distressing decisions the underground had to make in an effort to win the war and push Natzism out of a nations borders. I found the lead performances very moving and a fitting memorial to those who lost their lives defending our freedoms.

Flame and Citron

Dungbeetle from , 3rd September, 2009

A credible film noire complete with femme fatale. A Danish film with subtitles which relates the true story of two assassins in the Danish Resistance during WW2. One is a cold blooded killer and the other a fanatical hater of the invaders of his country. Viewers may recognise one as the main villain from the Bond film Casino Royale. This is one of the most effective portrayals of the quagmire such people exist in. Who do you believe or trust. What motives does each person have. Is the person you are next to friend or foe. The film does not shun from the fact that innocent as well as guilty people were executed which brings home the dilemma the fighters are in. The director explained that many committed suicide after the war, but ironically some of their worst opponents survived with Allied help.. If you liked Sophie Scholl you will like this film. Highly recommended for the thoughtful.

Powerful

There have been quite a few films on resistance in Nazi occupied europe and this is another solid, enjoyable account that is based on a true story, a number of good twists and turns all the way through.

distinctly overlong

A Customer from Blandford Forum, 14th January, 2010

Distinctly overlong - slow moving despite the action. Not sure whether it was worth persevering until the end and some of the sequences were rather perplexing: the ease with which the protagonists flitted from wartime occupied Denmark to neutral Stockholm, the ambiguous approach to the head of the Gestapo etc. Not highly recommended.

Rather good!

Other reviewers have given a good synopsis of the plot. So I'll just say that I thought this was a really good film. A reviewer suggested Black Book is better, but I would disagree. This film is less action packed, but has a grittiness and realism I found missing in Black Book (much as I enjoyed that film). I do not know how close it keeps to the truth, but it was so unflattering in its portrayal of all the characters that it certainly felt true to life, with the two 'heroes' both flawed men and possibly used by others in the resistance to kill innocent people. I found it genuinely tense and, though it runs for just over 2 hours, the time flew by.
