Based on the acclaimed book by Alexander Masters, STUART: A LIFE BACKWARDS is the unconventional non-fiction biography of homeless alcoholic Stuart Shorter. Benedict Cumberbatch (ATONEMENT, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL) plays Masters, a reclusive writer and illustrator who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Shorter--portrayed with a quiet intensity by Tom Hardy (WAZ, SCENES OF A SEXUAL NATURE)--during a campaign to release two charity workers from prison. As the pair get to know each other, more and more portentous details of Stuart's traumatic childhood and turbulent adolescence come to light. Fascinating by how these events contributed to Stuart's current situation, Alexander encourages him to tell his life story--in reverse to make it 'more exciting - like a Tom Clancy murder-mystery'. Gradually with plenty of pathos, dry dark humour and without shying away from the more malignant aspects of Stuart's personality or the crimes committed, a very complex and tragic life is unraveled.
Excellent performances from the leads and supporting players, plus an insightful, uncontrived script remaining close to the award-winning book, make STUART: A LIFE BACKWARDS stand out as a modern classic.

Witty, Wonderful, & Tragic.

kiterunner from , 1st October, 2008

Tom Hardy is outstanding in his portrayal of Stuart, a witty psychopathic raconteur. Dispite his rough and troubled life Stuart is an endearing and optimistic character. This film is both funny and sad and thanks to its writer tells an insightful life of the homeless. If you read the book you will also find a great chicken curry recipe too.

After living in the centre of London, Bristol and now Gloucester this book and film felt relevant to our daily life. If you've ever wondered why there are homeless people in todays society this gave us some hard edged answers. Funny, sad and delivered without the usual 'gush' it showed the tragedy of a life from childhood to the bitter end.

Superb film

Having read the book i was looking forward to seeing this for awhile but never would have had Tom Hardy down, he is virtually unrecognisable, taking the mindset and bringing the many levels that make Stuart up to the screen. One minute a charming, sweet funny, likable, and the next (when the mist decends) a dark twisted violent hurricane of a broken man trying to learn to live with his nightmares. The two main actors both do really well in portraying the growing bond and friendship between the two characters.

Very well acted

swalker from , 25th February, 2010

I really enjoyed watching this film with my partner as he has worked with a lot of people in the past with drug and alcohol problems who reminded him of Tom Hardy's character in this film, thus provoking conversation afterwards. Tom Hardy plays the part brilliantly, although it is a very difficult role to play. The film is quite depressing and has an inevitably unhappy ending, but it warms your heart as it is really about the unlikely friendship of the two central characters.
