Popularity is everything: break-ups and missed jump-shots are the end of the world, a college acceptance is a dream come true, and an e-mail forwarded to the wring people is your worst nightmare. Now experience senior year of high school through the eyes of five real-life Indiana teenagers: the Prom Queen (Megan), the Heartthrob (Mitch), the Jock (Colin), the Rebel (Hannah) and the Geek (Jake). This revealing year-in-the-life feature delivers the real heartbreak , hilarity and – OMG – drama of senior year first-hand from five very different viewpoints. And no matter who you identify with, everyone will relate to American Teen. Nanette Burstein’s (On the Ropes, The Kid Stays in the Picture) American Teen won the Directing Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Worth serious watching

A Customer from London, 24th July, 2009

This is a well-shot documentary, and it took me about 35 minutes to figure out it wasn't a Blair Witch fake-umentary. It's worth watching if you want to see craft and skill at work. The director has some amazing footage and she has edited it together, albeit disingenuously at times, to create a very compelling picture of some stereotypical teenage lives. Don't think of it as a movie. Think of it as a commercial-free, non-MTV-produced TV show.

Truly brilliant. An amazing examination of human (teenage) life in all its nastiness and beauty through 'the' four all-american archetypes: the geek, the jock, the cool/alternative girl, the wannabe prom queen. A must-see!
