When Arvilla Holden promises her husband that she'll cremate him and scatter his ashes, she doesn't expect her promise to be called so soon. Neither does she expect a high-stakes fight with her step-daughter Francine, a Santa Barbara socialite determined to give him a proper burial. Convinced that she has no choice but to surrender the ashes to Francine, Arvilla sets off on a journey from Pocatello, Idaho, to Santa Barbara. Her friends, life-of-the-party Margene and goody-two-shoes Carol, volunteer to go with her for moral support. Expecting to fly, they're surprised when Arvilla picks them up in her '66 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, and shocked when she cruises serenely past the airport and hijacks them on a reluctant road trip that becomes the ride of their lives.

Thelma and Louise + 1

I initially found the film a little slow but I warmed to it. It appeared to me more like an episode of Wish You Were Here from America. However, I watched it to the end and found it a most pleasant experience. I am now a little calmer, a little cosier and warmer. In fact this is a comfy cardigan of a movie.

Unexpected

I think i must have added this to my rentals by mistake! On reading the description i would never have chosen it as its not my kind of film. It was at home anyway so i thought id pop it in and give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised, found it to be funny and an enjoyable film. Sort of like a milder version of thelma and louise. Which reminds me, i want to wacth that one again. Back to my rental list :)

I thought this film was beautifully told and beautifully shot. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Joan Allen were all perfect in their roles as three friends travelling across America. It was funny, it was sad and very thought provoking. Enjoyed it very much and would recommend it as a perfect Friday night film with your girlfriends and a bottle of wine.

This is a lovely film, and one I would call a 'middle aged coming of age' - it was fun, intelligent, warm and enjoyable. Though there was a sad thread relating to loss there was also the self discovery that comes from loss. The three women were really good and fun to watch.
