Iron Man clobbers US box office challengers

Blockbusting adventure Iron Man has seen off the challenge of new entries Speed Racer and What Happens In Vegas… to stay at the summit of the US box office chart, new figures show.

According to data from Nielsen, the film took over $50 million (£25.47) in its second week - over $30 million more than its nearest rival, the high-octane anime adaptation Speed Racer, the latest effort from The Matrix writer/directors Andy and Larry Wachowski.

Meanwhile, screwball rom-com What Happens In Vegas… starring beautiful people Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher raked in $20 million on its opening weekend to finish a close third.

It was followed by Patrick Dempsey comedy Made Of Honour at four and pregnancy farce Baby Mama at five.

Jason Segel (Knocked Up) saw his debut feature as writer clock up its fourth week on the chart at number six, while slacker road trip Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay broke the $30 million barrier in seventh.

Martial arts mayhem from Jet Li and Jackie Chan kept the punters coming back for The Forbidden Kingdom, which takes this week's number eight spot.

Jodie Foster and 300's Gerard Butler help family fantasy Nim's Island to a sixth week in the top ten at nine and this week's chart is rounded off by mixed martial arts movie Redbelt, which stars Tim Allen, Lost's Rodrigo Santoro and Chiwetel Ejiofor of American Gangster and Children Of Men.
