Bafta award for Dad's Army pair
David Croft and Jimmy Perry, the veteran comedy writing duo behind vintage sit-coms including Dad's Army and Hi-De-Hi!, have received the Special Award at the Bafta TV Craft Awards 2008. The pair famously drew on personal experience for their scripts, with stints in the wartime Home Guard, an army concert party unit and the Butlin's Red Coats acting as the inspiration for the cast of characters that became the hapless but loveable crews of Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Hi-De-Hi!.
Croft also went on to work with Jeremy Lloyd to develop long-running hits 'Allo! 'Allo! and Are You Being Served?.
Other winners at the gala ceremony included Channel 4's hard-hitting drama Boy A - which scooped three gongs including best director for John Crowley - while another of the station's shows, teen drama Skins, took two awards.
BBC period drama Cranford also secured a brace of prizes, while documentary series Tribe won the award for best factual photography.
Doctor Who also claimed the best writing Bafta for the episode Blink, which was penned by The Office and Coupling scribe Steven Moffat.
The Bafta Craft TV Awards honours the achievements of those behind the camera.
